God Save the Nerds: Another Man I Wouldn't Want to Know, But Am Glad Existed: John Nash

I am deeply, unapologetically glad to be less intelligent than John Forbes Nash Jr. And I hope I am better liked interpersonally.

Hyper-brilliance of Nash’s magnitude is rarely a gift to the person who possesses it, and it is almost never a gift to the people who love them. Nash moved through the world with an icy, alienated arrogance, treating human relationships as minor inconveniences compared to the vast architecture of his own mind. Given the choice between his world-altering IQ and my own modest intellect—paired with the ability to build warm friendships, maintain a loving home, and actually be liked by the people around me—I would choose my average life every single time.

Yet, humanity needs its radical outliers. Nash was a deeply flawed, often cruel man, but his existence fundamentally reshaped how we understand human behavior, mathematics, and global strategy.

The Flawed Genius: Delusions, Misconduct, and Broken Lives

Hollywood heavily sanitized Nash’s story in A Beautiful Mind, replacing a cold and troubling personal history with a conventional story of romantic triumph. In reality, Nash’s extreme self-importance long predated his acute psychosis. He openly disdained his peers, viewed most people as intellectual inferiors, and left behind a wake of emotional damage:

* Abandonment and Neglect: In the early 1950s, Nash fathered a child with a nurse named Eleanor Stier. Upon learning of the pregnancy, he abandoned her, refusing to pay child support or allow his name on the birth certificate because he deemed Eleanor beneath his social and intellectual standing.

* Marital Turmoil: Nash married Alicia Lardé in 1957. Shortly after, his mental state disintegrated into severe paranoid schizophrenia, characterized by grand delusions of international conspiracies, secret messages hidden in print, and divine self-importance.

* Volatile Outbursts and Strain: The strain of Nash’s erratic paranoia, unpredictable aggression, and a 1954 arrest in a police sting in Santa Monica made cohabitation perilous. Alicia was forced to have him involuntarily committed to psychiatric institutions multiple times, and the couple divorced in 1963 during his illness, though she continued to shelter him before they eventually remarried decades later in 2001.

Auditing the Mind: Outsmarting Hallucinations Without Medicine

During his forced hospitalizations in the 1960s, Nash was subjected to high-dose antipsychotics and insulin shock therapy. While the medication dulled his terrifying delusions, it also heavily clouded his thinking. For a man whose entire identity was built on absolute cognitive clarity, this chemical fog was intolerable.

By February 1970, Nash made a fateful choice: he permanently stopped taking psychiatric medication.

Deprived of chemical stabilization, Nash turned his formidable mind inward, designing an explicit, logical framework to manage his schizophrenia:

* Empirical Verification: He treated delusions and auditory hallucinations as unverified hypotheses. When a paranoid thought or phantom voice emerged, he subjected it to strict logical tests against physical reality.

* Willful Rejection: If a thought failed empirical standards—such as a delusion that he was the Emperor of Antarctica—he consciously flagged it as an artifact of his disease.

* Behavioral Inhibition: He trained himself to ignore these flagged thoughts completely, refusing to act on them or speak about them.

For nearly twenty years, Nash survived as the "Phantom of Fine Hall" at Princeton—pacing corridors, writing equations on blackboards, speaking to no one, but successfully mastering his madness through pure mental discipline.

The Legacy: Game Theory, Higher Math, and the Nobel Prize

Despite decades lost to severe illness, Nash’s early mathematical breakthroughs permanently altered multiple disciplines:

* Game Theory & Economics: At age 21, Nash wrote a 28-page doctoral dissertation introducing the Nash Equilibrium. He proved that in any non-cooperative game with a finite number of players, there exists a point where no player can improve their outcome by unilaterally changing their strategy. This became the foundation of modern microeconomics, evolutionary biology, corporate planning, and Cold War defense strategy.

* Pure Mathematics: Mathematicians consider his work in geometry and differential equations even more impressive than his economic theories. His Nash Embedding Theorem proved that any Riemannian manifold can be isometric-embedded into Euclidean space, alongside major breakthroughs in non-linear partial differential equations.

* The Nobel and Abel Prizes: In 1994, as his cognitive lucidity returned, Nash was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. In 2015, shortly before his death, he received the Abel Prize—making him the only person in history to earn both of academia's highest honors in economics and mathematics.

Saving the Strange: Preserving Mind and Soul

Nash’s recovery reveals a persistent flaw in modern psychiatric care. Today, heavy psychiatric medication is still too often used as a sledgehammer—flattening a patient's suffering only by flattening their intellect, creativity, and personality along with it.

For ordinary minds, this trade-off is painful; for individuals with exceptional cognitive gifts, it can be a death sentence to the very thing that makes them unique. We must ask whether our current medical model prioritizes quiet compliance over true recovery.

God save the nerds—the strange, eccentric, and abnormally gifted minds who push human knowledge forward. To protect them, psychiatry must evolve beyond heavy chemical suppression. We need a model built on significantly lower medication dosages, integrated with structured systems of cognitive insight and deep family therapy. We also need us, the general public, to allow difference. If you don't like someone let them be. By supporting these extraordinary individuals with frameworks that help them audit their own minds, we can help them navigate a shared reality without destroying the rare intelligence that makes them so strangely valuable to us all.

What can you do? Go easy on labelling and diagnosing people, appreciate difference. If you don't like someone and they aren't doing anything illegal, disabling anyone, or harming anyone, leave them alone.

Resist the temptation to dispose of your weird relatives, friends, neighbours because in the long run, they might be helping you out. Tolerate.

And researching this I actually laughed out loud that John Nash's family joked that he could do a commercial for Subway because he liked the tuna sub so much. Maybe Subway can appreciate him posthumously and honour cognitive difference with a John Nash tuna sub!!!
