You Gotta Break a Few Eggs to Make 'Em Scrambled
Welcome to Smart Pig Kitchen: Where Laughter is the Main Ingredient (and Food Never Makes You Sad!)
Hey everybody, hey you! It’s Dana here (@smartpigkitchen), WELCOME!
First things first: No, this site isn’t about eating pork. The name is about my conscience—a "smart pig" brain that’s always thinking, dreaming. This is about a conscience that’s got a sense of humor, especially when it comes to poking fun at itself, or being a ham.
You see, my life isn't exactly a commercial for seamless movement. I'm differently abled. It's not a badge of honour or a tragedy; it’s just my reality. Sitting for too long, walking, even simple tasks can be painful. And my hands... let's just say open wounds are a frequent uninvited guest.
The Sound of Music (Or Just Breaking Dishes)
In the Smart Pig Kitchen, we have a very specific soundtrack. Sometimes it’s the sizzle of garlic, but often, it’s the sudden crash of a bone china plate meeting the floor. You better believe I like to mix and match my tableware because there aren't many complete sets here.
Because of my condition, I don't always have a vote in what my hands decide to do. They have a mind of their own, and sometimes they decide that holding onto a dish is simply "optional." I’ve learned that you can’t cry over spilled milk, and you certainly can’t cry over a shattered plate. If I didn't laugh when a bowl goes flying, I'd never get anything done. It’s just part of the choreography here—a little bit of grace, followed by a lot of sweeping.
Omelettes vs. Scrambled Eggs
I went to cooking school. I have the training, the technique, and the "official" background. But some days, my brain decides to hit the "delete" button on specific files.
There are mornings where I stand over a pan and completely forget the structural engineering required for a perfect omelette. Funny because this was the entrance criteria. But you know what? My omlette this morning became some delicious scrambled eggs with thyme and mushrooms.
Maybe it’s because scrambled eggs are honest. They’re messy, they’re forgiving, and they don't care if your hands are shaking or if you’ve forgotten the French method. They taste just as good when they're "perfect" as they do when they're a "happy accident." It’s a reminder that even when the fancy stuff fails, the soul of the dish remains.
The Mindful Raisin (and the Mindless Dishes)
Heston Blumenthal calls it the "mindful raisin"—the idea of being fully present in every tiny detail of an experience. For me, food is my raison d’être. It’s art, history, and emotion wrapped into one.
When I tell my mum I like doing dishes because it’s mindful—focusing on the warmth of the water and the texture of the soap—she just sighs and says, “Well, I guess it’s kind of mindless.”
Generation gap, right?
Why We’re Here
Smart Pig Kitchen isn't about being white or not being white. It’s not about being strictly vegan or keto. It’s about not worrying so much about the words people choose for you. It’s about being funny, laidback, and friendly. It's about preserving the moral compass, by asking your own smart pig conscience when to laugh it off.
Most of all, it’s about the absolute fact that food doesn't make you sad. Food is joy. It's Gastronomical love. It’s the thread that weaves through my life, even when my body tells me to slow down. I’m not here to present a polished, picture-perfect culinary journey. This is real life—a little messy, a lot mindful, and always worth a laugh. Smart Pig Kitchen is about never ever giving up.
So, grab an apron! Welcome to the kitchen! My food is always rustic, homemade, simple, DIY because trust me, I absolutely love eating, so flavour is very important! Food that won't make you sad!
